When I began this course, I felt lost and overwhelmed. Create your own portfolio? Me overseeing my own creativity? Could I do it? Would it meet everyone’s expectations? Am I on the right path? As I reflect on my journey so far, I’m beginning to understand what it means to have ownership of my portfolio. Having ownership of my portfolio lets me have a voice and have creative freedom while I create it. It’s not just a digital domain to collect data but more of a reflection in what I have accomplished and the struggles I’ve had to conquer (Rikard, 2015)
Thinking critically has not been my biggest strength coming into this program. In my career working with technology, I’ve never created a portfolio that would showcase my work. My mindset was set to someone showing me how to do it and not question it. I feel coming into this program would break that form of thinking and allow me to think outside the box and bring innovative ideas in changing technology in the workplace.
In my Innovation Proposal, I started to see the kinds of changes I wanted to implement in my current department in higher education. Looking at the weekly readings and videos, I began to question myself to see what changes can help staff with our current technology. I started to do research and began to ask my colleagues what some of their troubles and frustrations are and began to see a pattern. Documenting this on my proposal as well as talking with my group has guided me to focus more on helping staff and developing a solution which will benefit them and trickle down to the students in the end. On writing my proposal, for the first time I felt I had a voice and sense of purpose by collaborating with others who share a common interest in change.
Talking with my group has also helped me to realize that we all share a common interest in innovating technology in education. We all come from different backgrounds, but we have the same thoughts and frustrations when it comes to our current education system. Looking at the group’s portfolio’s, I can tell that their personalities resonate with their portfolio’s. Each person has their own story to tell and we all want students of this generation to be able to learn and succeed by using new technologies that can keep them engaged and interactive.
